We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future
- Franklin D. Roosevelt
Vision:
Our program is designed to provide a place for Rangatahi to engage with youth workers/social workers and caregivers during Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, by prioritising mental health and fitness to maintain the foundation of Te whare tapa whā and Fonofale. Our fitness initiative focuses on the engagement with Rangatahi and their adult caregiver, youth worker/social work to connect in a neutral space where they are challenged individually with a collaborative outcome of team work, motivation and support is present and achieved.
Opportunity/why is this initiative needed:
As a social worker/youth worker, our roles involve meeting with our rangatahi face to face. Once Covid-19, lockdown restrictions are in place, we are unable to connect physically with our youth. During level three, our government has allowed outdoor exercise and for some of our rangatahi, getting out of the house and having one on one conversation with youth workers/social workers is imperative as workers cannot engage fully with rangatahi over the phone through phone calls or text messages and therefore, as we are restricted for what we can do, this initative is designed to get our youth out the house, engaging with their youth/social workers and equally having the opportunity for korero/talanoa
Our rangatahi are being affected the most by the restrictions of lockdown, it means less interaction with peers, health and social workers and more time at home, where for some youth may endure more stress to themselves and their families in the current environment New Zealand is currently facing.
Our fitness initiative involves the ‘Discipline Box’, an outdoor fitness made trailer to carry out outdoor fitness initiatives. This means our initiatives can be taken further than just our gym, but can also provide workouts with in close proximity to where youth hubs are located for easier access to training.
Fitness is proven to increase mood, mental clarity, and increase emotional stability and endorphins. We strongly believe that we can bridge gaps between workers and parents with our Rangatahi when they are feeling better mentally and physically. This is a need that has not been considered in the Covid-19 response and we are invested in creating this space for our Ranagatahi - they are our Future
